How to Follow the FP 10-Week Online Course
There’s investment, but you have support.
The “10-Week Online Course” is a trusted way to get started with Functional Patterns. Some clients, I am finding, are feeling a little overwhelmed by the process of going through the video content. So, I’d like to introduce you to a framework to help simplify your journey through the course.
The course requires some investment of time and resources, but you have support. Let’s start your Functional Patterns self-study with confidence.
How is the Course organized?
The Course is divided into three phases: MFR, posture training, and integrated corrective exercises. These topics are covered in video content over the course of 10 weeks.
It is helpful to view the phases and weeks in more granularity. Below is an outline of how I’d characterize the organization of the course, so that you know what to expect each week:
Phase 1: Myofascial Release (Weeks 1-3)
Week 1: Broad Self Myofascial Release with Medicine Ball
Week 2: More Pin-Pointed Self Myofascial Release with Lacrosse Ball
Week 3: More Pin-Pointed Self Myofascial Release with Theracane
Phase 2: Understanding the Basics of Posture (Week 4)
Phase 3: Integrative Corrective Exercises (Weeks 5-10)
Week 5: Integrated Core Work
Weeks 6-8: Thoracic Extension and Posterior Chain
Week 9: Intro to Rotational Movement
Week 10: Intro to Dynamic Movement
What tools do I need?
You can purchase a 10-Week Course tool starter kit under “shop”.
What will be the most valuable information I learn?
The course is an excellent primer on understanding how common non-optimal gait patterns create non-optimal posture patterns; accordingly, it also shows how these patterns create predictable patterns of shortened tissue, as well as predictable patterns of overly-lengthened flaccid tissue in our bodies. This starts you out on an MFR and movement journey that is gait- and posture-based, which is the most effective way to think about movement and massage.
Wait, which muscle groups am I myofacial releasing?
There is three weeks of coursework covering what to myofascially release and why. To help you organize for yourself what to work on while practicing, I’d recommend purchasing a physical copy of Naudi Aguilar’s The Power of Posture. Some of the content/knowledge within it is still under development, but it does a generally great job of illustrating succinctly the posture patterns and where to MFR due to them.
